December 1 as World AIDS Day

December 1 as World AIDS Day

John Carocci

In 1988 a global summit of health officials designated December 1 as World AIDS Day, a day to focus international attention on the pandemic and remember those lost to the disease. December 1, 2008 will mark the 20th observance of World AIDS Day, and despite increased public awareness and advances in prevention and treatment, AIDS continues to be one of the most destructive epidemics in history.

AIDS Community Services of Western New York is planning a day-long program of events for World AIDS Day, including a display of nearly 100 fabric memorial panels which make up the Mending of the Hearts project. The ACS front lawn will also be blanketed by 452 red ribbons, one for each client lost to AIDS since the agency was established in 1983. For a complete schedule of World AIDS Day events, please send email here. For more informat…

A Book Celebrating Buffalo That Gives Back To Its Creator

Eli George

The only way to spread the word about Buffalo is to share with others through some form of media the positive sides of the city. Everyone knows that’s what Buffalo Rising attempts to accomplish, but it seems every time the city is mentioned in a newspaper it is invariably about something negative – for example, here’s their favorite: snow. Though it may take awhile to make some headway with the papers, at least we can say we definitely have books on our side. Buffalo Heritage is a printing company whose mission is to promote Buffalo’s rich history.

Started in 2006, the company has become the proud printer of a number of books that showcase what the community that remained in Buffalo has to offer. They publish GardenWalk, Postcard Views, and PEACEPRINTS as well as a number of other books. Most recently, they are publishing “The Fine Art of Capturing Buffalo,” by Mark …

Stephen Stanley and Carla MacNeil

BRO Reader Submission

By Dick Shaner

May 2006, Carla MacNeil, violin in hand, and Stephen Stanley walked on stage at a low-key gig at Mitzi's Sister in downtown Toronto. In Carla's own words, the night was a "glad you missed it" affair, but the week of rehearsal leading up to the gig had been enough to get Stanley excited enough to dig into a major change of musical direction. "I knew that I wanted to introduce a violin into the new songs, but I hadn't bargained on finding someone to share lead vocals with."

Instantly, the idea of forming a post-Low band was dropped, the new duo was where it was going...

Stanley first came to prominence as a founding member of Toronto's indie faves, Lowest of the Low. During their celebrated career the band released four CDs, sold more than 100,000 records, and toured endlessly. Perhaps their high-water mark was the release of their 1991 certified gold album S…
