Tryout Protocol

The tryout process is the most important time of the year for our club.  Your level of professionalism will be held up to the highest standard by everyone who attends.  The guidelines below are to give you details for what BSC expects from you as a coach and a representative of the club.

Dress Code

  • Please wear BSC gear if it is available.  If it is not, please wear BSC colored clothing - green or orange.
  • Please wear soccer shorts or pants, or kaki pants or shorts.  No jeans, cargo pants, or "worn" looking lower garments.
  • Hats are acceptable as long as they are worn properly and there are no inappropriate logos or sayings on them.  No backwards baseball caps or visors.
  • Soccer shoes should be worn.  Sneakers are acceptable.  Sandals, even soccer sandals, are not acceptable footwear.
  • In general soccer clothing is best.  Anything with political positions, racial or ethnic slurs, or profanity of any kind is prohibited.

Conduct

  • Please give 100% of your attention to the players on the field.  Chatting during the evaluation time should be limited to discussion about the players.
  • Speaking to familiar players should be limited to hello.  Do not discuss personal information or details about past experienced together.
  • Conversations with parents should also be professional and limited to hello and details about the program.

What to bring with you...

  • Sun block
  • Clipboard
  • Writing utensil
  • Cones and scrimmage vests
  • Sunglasses or hat

Selection Process

  • Start out each tryout session taking attendance to make sure everyone registered properly and you have a number for each kid on the field.  Each age group will be designated a first number on their tryout number.  For example the u14's should all start with a #3, 301, 302, 303, etc.
    • Identify who is trying out as a goalkeeper immediately
    • Play goalkeepers in goal as early as the small sided games.  Fields without a goalkeeper present can play to small cone goals.
  • Each player should get a designation after each tryout.  You never know if you will see that player in the next tryout or not.  Your evaluation page should have a designation as well as some notes on each kid.
  • You should rank your waiting list players so you know who to go to next when a roster position in the pool is turned down.
  • Each player gets one of the following designations...
    • White Roster - you are 100% certain they belong on the "A" team (0 to 12 players can be named "White")
    • Pool - you are certain they are deserving of being in the pool, but need to see them some more before determining where in the pool they will fall
    • Waiting List - you believe they can benefit from being in the BSC program, but they are not good enough to be in the pool without someone turning down a spot
  • Each session is blocked off for two hours, but I want the session to run closer to an hour and a half
    • There will be a short warm-up, followed by small sided games, and a full sided game
    • For the small sided games the fields should be broken down into three smaller fields running the width.  The center field should be your top field.  Players will be moved around on a regular basis to evaluate them against the better talent in the pool.  Everyone should get some time, even if just a minute, on the top field.  The lower, side fields can be evenly balanced or a "B" level and a "C" level.
    • Deviation from this pattern must have approval by the DOC before the tryout session.
  • No cuts will be made at the u10 or u11 age groups.  U12's should only be cut if they are very poor.
  • All players need to attend tryouts in their respective age groups.  Players will be moved up by the staff if necessary.

Players Missing Tryouts

  • A player who is missing both tryouts can not be rostered as White directly from tryouts.
  • All previous year's "A" team players can be given an automatic spot in the player pool if they can not attend any of the tryout dates.

Roster Sizes (Maximums)

  • u10's, u11's and u12's - unlimited pool sizes (we will create more than two teams if necessary to accomodate "too many" quality younger players)

Additional Notes

  • Coaches assisting in the evaluation process should turn in their clearly written notes at the end of the session to the head coach
  • Everyone should contact the age group's previous coaches if possible for additional data on their players
  • Please come early or stay late to help with other tryouts before or after your scheduled session
